Got out at Minster last night for my first after work sail this year. The
Minster webcam had been showing it blowing a steady F5 all day, and I
arrived at about 6:45 to find half a dozen guys (Ricky Wooding and a few
mates) all out on the water, but on bigger kit than I was anticipating
(that minster weather station definitely over-reads by at least 5mph). I
rigged my 7.0 in a frenzy and got down to the waterline, just as the wind
dropped. Wobbled out, cursing my luck and wobbled back in again, not in the
best of moods. So I went and had a chat witn Ricky who by now was on the
beach. Then, five minutes later the wind came back up - still big sail
weather, but enough to get planing. Ricky kindly let me have a go on his
Exocet Scross (160L) monster with his Gaastra GTX 7.5. With that
combination, it was easy enough to ge planing. It felt strange to be back
on a huge board, and I was struck by how it was quite a bit more difficult
to waterstart on a board that size. Still, had a good old sail on that,
blasting along with the sun setting - bliss! I later came back in again and
took out my own board, by 105L was a bit on the small side for those
conditions. Finally packed up about 9.15 and went to the pub with Ricky and
his mates (can't remember all the names...) and had a good natter about kit
over Guinness. Perfect evening - wish they were all like that!
